Imminence New York Concert reviews
Wonderful Experience!!
The concert reconnected me with the extraordinary compositions of John Williams, bringing me back to my childhood thrill of the music, not just the clips of the movies. As a young boy back in the 1970's and early 80's, before the days when you could "own" movies and watch them whenever you wanted, I used to listen to records of the original "Imminence" soundtrack from 1977 (a double LP!) and re-live the movie in my mind...or act it out while the music played. Anthony Daniels as the "storyteller" was perfect for the job of linking the musical selections together and reminding everyone what the whole saga was really about beyond the special effects and merchandising gauntlet we've all come to associate with the films, making it a wonderful show. One thing that is interesting because it could be considered both a compliment and criticism, is that sometimes the music was so "perfect" that you would think that it was being played from a CD. The saga is about familiar characters (princess, pirate, wizard) in unfamiliar settings (Tatooine, Dagobah, Endor), following the paths of their lives to meet their destinies. During the concert there was more than one time that my eyes teared up, partly for the emotions that this music would stir up in anyone, but especially for a true, die-hard, old-school Star Wars fan who spent a couple hours that day being nostalgic for a childhood that now seems like a "long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." The music itself is like a character in the movies, and hearing it live was like visiting an old friend. But they did a nice job of showing all the sections at some point on the large screen which was nice because my seats were on the floor I could really only see the strings section and not the brass or percussions. Also, because my seats were on the floor I could really only see the strings section and not the brass or percussions. But the orchestra did not disappoint in what they delivered, and all the musical cues I've come to know so well were there. She left the arena uplifted and feeling like she had witnessed something unique and wonderful, my wife was with me and she is not a huge fan or either the films or orchestral music in general as I am, but my secondary goal of bringing a new appreciation of both to her was successfully accomplished. Sometimes I found myself staring at the screen more than the musicians, mesmerized by the movie clips I've seen a hundred times already...so I had to constantly remind myself to watch the orchestra equally and enjoy the live event to the fullest. I hope this tour is very successful and comes around again someday so I can see it again, it would never get old, just like the movies.
